Robert Young papers, 1862-1865, 1870.

The collection consists of letters from Robert Young to his cousin Col. W.T. Young in Eatonton, Georgia from July 28, 1862 to May 1, 1865 while serving in Company G, of the 12th Georgia Infantry Regiment. His letters provide extensive information regarding the activities of the 12th Regiment, who during the early part of the war were under the direction of Stonewall Jackson. Fighting almost exclusively in Virginia, his letters include descriptions of the battles of Cross Keys, 2nd Manassas (the second battle of Bull Run), Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Spotsylvannia.

Robert Young of Putnam County, Georgia was appointed 3rd Sergeant of Company C, 2nd Battalion Georgia State Troops on December 5, 1861. He mustered out of the Battalion in May of 1862, but enlisted as a private in Company G, of the 12th Georgia Infantry Regiment on May 14, 1862. He was wounded three times during the war, on May 3, 1862 at Chancellorsville, Virginia; on July 1, 1862 at Malvern Hill, Virginia; and on August 21, 1864 at Summit Point, Virginia.
